Megan and Will decided to elope somewhere exotic, but to appease friends and family, they threw an engagement party beforehand at the amazing Staple & Fancy Mercantile in Ballard. To everyone’s surprise Megan and Will secretly had plans to be married mid-way through this party. As guests enjoyed conversation and appetizers, Megan slipped away to change into her wedding dress hanging in the stairwell nearby.
Meanwhile, their good friend, Tim, who was in on the whole surprise, took the mic and the room’s attention. He looked around and then to Will and told him that he was pretty disappointed that he didn’t get to go to New Zealand for their real wedding. Of course, people laughed but he continued, “We got some people here, so, maybe we should just do this now.”
“Shut-up” … “Are you kidding?” from the audience.
“I’m not kidding. I’m an ordained minister. But we need some rings. Do we have rings?” Now, at this point there was a bit of laughter because there’s not way they were actually going to get married at this party, right? However, another of Will’s friends, Andrew, jumped up and shouted, “I have rings! Here’s their engagement rings!”
Now the room was really buzzing. Tim continued, “I guess the next thing we’d need is, uh, marriage certificate”.
“Your. Kidding!” said another friend in disbelief as Will revealed the certificate he had stowed away in his jacket.
More gasping and bewilderment from the room: “Why do you have that??!”
Tim confirmed that, indeed, what Will had looked like a real marriage license which caused the room to roar.
“All we need now is the bride!”
Guess what? I recorded the whole thing on a little Flip camera I rubber-banded onto the wall…
